Internet Censorship and A Small Task

I have mentioned that the internet was freed up for the Olympics by the Chinese authorities, at least in the “green zone” where my hotel is located. So, I have been having trouble accessing some of my favourite daily blogs, nothing scandalous - but I can’t get on huffington post for example, but I can see media matters. There are a tonne of sites and especially blogs that I can’t get to and a certain well known journalist told me he couldn’t get on his favourite porn sites…I have no idea what he is talking about.
Anyway, so the whole internet freedom thing has not been a total success. I still find it weird to look a the internet and know that my access is impeded and also to have the sneaking suspicion that every key stroke is being monitored. No proof...allegation only!
I have a small task for you. One of the occurrences that has had the most profound effect on me since being in Beijing is the manner in which people serve you. When you are handed something, a bill, a business card, whatever, it is handed with two hands and eye contact. I am addicted and I am appealing to you to try it. It really feels different. In a good way. I feel like I take a second, a moment that doesn’t impinge on my day but shows a second’s consideration, to connect with someone in a really non-invasive way, and I get that same moment back in return.
I am telling you, try it. No false affect, don’t try to “be asian” be genuine and give it a go…enjoy the moments!
